Aishwarya Shield English Spelling Contest
One of the strong points of St Xavier’s alumni has always been command over the English language, largely due to the hard work of teachers like Fr James J Donnelly. In order to encourage and assist students of other schools to improve the English vocabulary the GAA started the first English spelling contest in Nepal. The first contest was held during the Presidency of late Indra Bikram Shah in 1972. The late queen Aishwarya Rajya Laxmi Devi Shah donated the running shield and gave the name to the annual event. The primary level contest was introduced in 1998. The annual Aishwarya Shield English Spelling Contest today is one of the most widely awaited events in school calendars.
Niesen AwardThe Father Niesen Service Award honors the memory of Jesuit Father Edward Niessen, who came to Nepal just over a half century ago to help in the work of the recently founded St Xavier’s Godavari School.
He was quickly named superior and principal of Godavari, and later served as both principal of Jawalakhel and rector of all the Jesuits in Nepal. He was an architect and a builder in both the literal and figurative sense. He single-handedly directed physical expansion of the new school in Jawalakhel. But he also masterfully guided the development of Jesuit education efforts in Nepal.
He holds a special place of honor in the hearts of alumni because he was the driving force behind the formation of an alumni association and we look to him as a founding father of the Godavari Alumni Association. More ..
Ratna Shield Quiz ContestLikewise the GAA also began one of the longest running college level general knowledge quiz contest. The running trophy for the Ratna Shield Quiz Contest was provided by former Queen mother Ratna Rajya Laxmi Devi Shah in 1988 .
Fr. Watrin National Open Basketball TournamentThe sport of baskeball was introduced to Nepal through St. Xavier’s School and the love for the game did not subside even after students finished their schooling. The alumni has been organising an annual basketball tournament in memory of late Fr. Eugene L. Watrin S.J. every year. The tournament is Nepal’s most prestigious baskeball tournament.
3 on 3 Donnelly CupThe 3 on 3 Donnelly Cup was introduced in 2007 to promote basketball in its faster version. Also known as street basketball the tournament is played with two teams composed of three players each. This is an open tournament and is in its third year.
Champadevi Cleanup CampaignTo make our members more aware of the need to keep our environment clean the GAA has been sending our volunteers to clean up Champadevi hill on the southern flank of Kathmandu Valley annually. The hill is religiously, culturally and environmentally important to the valley with its attachment to various legends and as one of the main sources of water for the people living in the area. As a popular picnic spot the area however is littered with garbage which GAA volunteers clean up ever spring.
Revived GAA ForumThe GAA Forum once the hotbed of public political discussions and debates in an era when there were no such platforms has been revived. The forum is held on the first Thursday of every month on the Gregorian calendar and involves discussions on a wide range of issues with experts giving their comments.
GAA Welcome PartyThe traditional GAA Welcome Party where the older members welcome the fresh graduates from St. Xavier’s and St. Mary’s School is held every year after the School Leaving Examinations are over.
