In 1972, Late Indra Bikram Shah started
a spelling contest in the name of the late Queen Aishwarya Rajya Laxmi Devi Shah which is now popularly known as Aishwarya
Shield. The contest has been
targeting to enhance English vocabulary and promote leadership and competitiveness amongst the students. Starting this year, Aishwarya
Shield Spelling Contest also organised preliminary rounds outside the Kathmandu Valley. Hence, we celebrated Aishwarya
Shield’s 36th year as the 1st National Aishwarya Shield Spelling Contest.
The last day to register was 10th June 2011.
The official dictionary used was the eighth edition of the Oxford Dictionary.
Puspanjali School won the junior rounds and Skylark School won the senior rounds.

The Late Queen had graced this contest throughout her lifetime except the years 1993, 1994, 1995 and 1997, in which it was graced by other royalties like The Late King Dipendra Bir Bikram Shah in 1993, hon. British Ambassador to Nepal in 1994 and in 1995 and 1997 by Princess Shraddha Laxmi Devi Shah. In 1990, 91 and 92 the contest couldn’t be held due to several political and social circumstances. After the demise of Queen Aishwarya, former Queen Komal Shah and the hon. British Ambassador to Nepal has taken the pleasure to grace this function.
The main aim and objective of this contest is to promote this type of contest from the base and help in the enrollment of the youth participation and to improve the vocabulary of the students. It has played a paramount role in the promotion of knowledge among the students. The contest gives an overall outlook to the importance of representing the school and the nation for any important event.
